El Sombrero

El Sombrero is a great sit-down Mexican-style restaurant. With its low prices, everyone can go enjoy a great taste of what Mexican cuisine is like. They are open every day of the week with two locations in Statesboro: 600 Northside Drive, Suite A, and 406 Fair Road. I usually go to the one located on Northside Drive. It is somewhat smaller, but the food is just as good. They have a wide variety of food ranging from tacos to fajitas. If you go eat at "El Som" or "The Hat" as some college students call it, you can walk out of there spending only about $6.oo, which is a bargain for any college student. "Trust me, I know." The "El Som" on Fair Road also has a bar and music, where college students can go and have a drink with friends, still enjoying the atmosphere. The lunch menu offers the same meals as dinner, just in smaller portions and lower prices. But dinner is still inexpensive. You get free refills on your soft drinks and sweet tea and all of the chips and salsa that one can eat. Personally, I always fill up on chips and salsa before my meal arrives. It never fails, I can not leave El Som without feeling stuffed. "It's a great feeling!!" The waiters and waitresses are very friendly and always make me feel at home when I am there, and trust me, I eat there all the time. They even know what I want to drink as soon as I walk in the door. It seems to me that you always see the familiar, friendly faces when I go in there.

As I mentioned earlier, the prices are hard to beat, and they offer anything "Mexican" you can think to order. For appetizers, they offer a bowl of cheese dip for around $3.00, and a side of sour cream or guacamole for $.75. For lunch, you can get lunch fajitas for about $7.00. The lunch fajitas can be chicken, steak, shrimp, or a combination of all three. They are served along with onions, tomatoes, and peppers. You also get a salad and your choice of rice or beans. "What a bargain!" You can also get most any kind of quesadilla: shrimp, steak, chicken for only about $4.00. The nachos are one of my favorites. They offer beef and cheese nachos, chicken, steak, or the texas fajita nachos which is shrimp, steak, chicken, peppers, onions and tomatoes, all topped with nachos and cheese dip. It's wonderful. This costs about $4-6, depending on whether you want a half or full order. Tacos (hard or soft) are only about $1.25 each. They also have burritos, chimichangas, and enchiladas for low prices. Well, enough about prices.

I know some of you are thinking, "Well I am a vegetarian." They have food for you too. You can get a taco salad, or the wonderful mushroom and spinach quesadilla, along with many other options.

El Som is also the perfect place to go to celebrate a birthday celebration. They sing "Happy Birthday" to you in Spanish and put the Sombrero hat on you while they sing. It is an unforgettable experience, and highly entertaining.

El Som has many options for everyone. You could eat at El Som everyday for a month and never eat the same thing twice. How cool is that. The wonderful atmosphere and fine cuisine makes going out to eat, whether alone or with friends or family, lots of fun.
